Gucci Sunglasses 2011 Spring Summer - Runway Sunglasses

Gucci sunglasses, like those of many other big brands, are hit or miss.  Generally they go the safe route and save the more original frames for the runway.  Today we'll look at a few styles only seen on the runway and a few of the more common frames they have out for Spring/Summer 2011.

 Gucci Runway Sunglasses 2011

This is the first frame that caught my eye on from their photo section for 2011, however you won't find it in the list of available frames.  It's a shame, because it is one of the nicer frames they have now.  This begs the question, why display this frame when it's not for sale?  I know they want to generate interest for the season with some sharp frames.
Gucci Sunglasses 2011 Spring Summer GG 1636/S
Gucci Sunglasses 2011 Spring Summer GG 3160/S

These two frames are not bad looking but have a lot of G's all over them.  Though not terribly looking, I could do without the crazy branding.  GG 3160/S above is a sweet-looking cat eye shape, but I prefer minimal frames with this kind of style.

So why do so many brands show stuff at the show that you'll never be able to buy?

Another lost frame.

Cassius Eyewear - MIES

Cassius Eyewear is a brand that launched only in 2008 but has gained some traction already.  They are definitely subtle in design and shape.  I've seen a few pairs before, but MIES caught my eye.  The brand is big on classic shapes and likes to keep the logo low-key.  You won't see big fake diamonds on the sides of these frames.  The coloring and shape speaks for itself.

 Cassius Eyewear MIES

MIES is an aviator shaped frame that has some excellent detailing.  If you look closely (click pictures) you'll see the pattern built into the temples and bridge.  It's this attention to detail which makes MIES different from you standard boring aviator.

Cassius has many more interesting frames.  Check out their site for more.

Cutler and Gross 2010 Sunglasses - Autumn/Winter

Cutler and Gross have been absent from the blog for some time and that is just not right.  They had a great Spring/Summer collection and the Autumn/Winter is even better.  We are seeing more of the good stuff from them, albeit seemingly more conservative shapes here, fitting for the season.  The dark and dreary colors are great for the season and the simplicity in the frames is excellent.  These are the kind of sunglasses that will go with a suit.

Here are three frames we really like from the collection:

Cutler and Gross 2010 - 0985

0736 - Where with a 3-piece suit

0902 - Masculine elegance?

There are more risque shapes available, just take a look at their site (and enjoy the epic music).

Illesteva 2010 Spring/Summer Sunglasses - Leonard

German sunglasses brand Illesteva release another nice looking classic model with Leonard. It has elements of the class Persol 649 and other sunglass shapes for the 50's and 60's. Their sunglasses are all made in Italy, famous for it's acetate. I prefer the translucent tan colored frame for it's simplicity.

I love this color

Lotho Sunglasses - First Look

Lotho sunglasses launched in 2008 and and I've taken a look at their first few models. There are some classic shapes and colors surrounded by a few riskier frames to keep things fresh. The frames are all hand made in Japan, which is a good sign. A lot of quality stuff is being made there right now.

Here we look at three of the best frames from Lotho's first bunch.

Lotho Sunglasses - Allie

Lotho Sunglasses - Polly

Lotho Sunglasses - Jim

I've only seen the photos but if the actual sunglasses are anything close to the pictures then we are looking at some nice stuff here. I like how they are experimental with the color on both the traditional and more modern shapes.

Look for more from them in the near future. Let me know if you've got a pair.

9five Sunglasses Fall 2009 Collection – Skate Sunglasses

In clothing there is literally a brand to fill every niche – B-boy, rocker, goth, crackhead, preppy, etc.. With the start of the new brand 9five, we now have sunglasses for skaters. This is their first year on the scene and I imagine not the last.

The styles for their Fall 2009 collection are fairly conservative, basing a lot of the frames on some classic shapes. Where they shine is in the coloring. What we see are some nice gradient shades and lenses, pastels, blues and translucents.

9five sunglasses - Cult Classic

9five sunglasses - DM-83

9five sunglasses - Blocks

9five sunglasses - Major

Perhaps the nicest thing about these are the cost. You can get a pair for about $50 US. Check out their full collection and excellent skate videos on their site.

Erlik Eyewear – Italian Crafted – Canadian Designed

Recently I’ve come across a new brand for myself, called Erlik. I’ve take a look a several of their pairs and I’m really impressed. I’ve learned a bit about them and I’d love to present them to you today.

Erlik was started in the early 2000’s by Alex Masse, from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He began the first line by bringing back classic 70's styles such as aviators. After developing a few nice styles, a manufacture was found in Italy where Erlik sunglasses are still made today. This is a significant difference that Erlik has over many of the larger brands who can now only claim to be from Italy. The brand grew in Canada via word of mouth now is going international.

Erlik Sunglasses - Mayday

Erlik Sunglasses - Detention

Erlik Sunglasses - Delight

The quality of the frames is quite nice. I've had the chance to try on a few myself and what struck me first was the metal and hinges. They use alloys of monel, silver and beryllium which creates an near indestructible product that has a nice finish. The plastic frames use TR-90, which is used by a lot of high-end sports brands, so you could use them in sporting. Finally, the hinges are excellent. They are not held together by screws but use a flexible polymer curved hinge which is like nothing I've ever seen. Apparently, Erlik has the global patent for this so they are in the realms of IC Berlin and other European brands with this technological exclusivity.

The styles are very loud but not completely wacky. There is a pair here that will fit you. There are over 10 different styles in the collection right now and it is growing. My favourite styles are shown here now.

If you need more information about them check out their website and have a look around.

New Dita Sunglasses Line – Lancier

I've just got word that Dita is releasing a new line of sunglasses, dubbed “Lancier”. Apparently the line is going to be “high-end performance driven eyewear”. Here are some close-ups of the first pair, still nameless.

Dita Lancier Sunglasses - Perhaps the first release is a big aviator

Nice packaging

It's great to see new releases from Dita. I'm not sure how many different models are going to be released under the Lancier name, but it looks like there is at least one model now. They are dedicating enough to Lancier to make another separate website, so I'm anticipating a lot. The website is still under development, so we'll be keeping an eye on it. Check back here for more later.

Paris Sunglasses – Paris Hilton Launches Sunglass Brand

Just this week Paris Hilton has released her own line of sunglasses at the International Vision Expo in New York.  Gripping Eyewear will be producing the sunglasses which all will boldly say, “Paris” on the temples.

Paris Hilton Sunglasses - Not a bad shape

Apparently there will be a large number of styles available, but I’ve only seen her modelling the own above, and I don’t have the name for it.  It’s actually an interesting shape.  It’s almost like the temples were designed completely separately from the front of the sunglasses.

Right now there is no information on pricing, but hopefully we’ll get that soon.

New Ray-Ban Sunglasses 2009 (4122, 3361, 3384)

Ray-Ban sunglasses are iconic all over the world.  Their two styles, the Aviator and Wayfarer, represent the template for how half of all sunglasses are made and are the two best selling styles ever.  However, they come up with new styles every year and today we’ll look at where they are going for 2009.

Ray-Ban Sunglasses 3384

New Ray-Ban sunglasses appear ever year, but to be honest, many of them are a spin-off of their own styles and are just simple updates.  The Ray-Ban 3384 is one of those styles.  It is basically an updated version of the Wayfarer, with a more technical look.  The shape is the same, but the outline of the frame is now a fine metal instead of the standard acetate.  If you are looking for something similar to the Wayfarer but don’t want the exact thing, this could be a choice.  The price is about $110.00.

Ray-Ban Sunglasses 4122

Ray-Ban sunglasses are usually known for their masculine styles but we see some more female-specific frames from time to time and the Ray-Ban 4122 is one of them.  The shape is a vintage one, and I like it.  The temples don’t connect flush with the frame, and I like this little bit of design.  It comes in several colors and the price is about $80.00.

Ray-Ban Sunglasses 3361

The Ray-Ban 3361 is one of the many full cover wraps from their latest selection.  Styles like this have to compete with brands like Prada and Gucci so I don’t know how well they will do.  I think the style looks fine and is much cheaper than those other brands, but it doesn’t stick out as very original.  The price is about $130.

Ray-Ban sunglasses in general are quite conservative.  You won’t see a lot of risqué design, but that’s never what they have been about.  Sunglasses are more like a tradition for them.  For more information about their most famous styles and celebrities that wear them, use the search function on the blog.

New Gucci Sunglasses 2009 (2985, 2807, 2969, 2935)

Gucci sunglasses, ah, how sweet.  Let’s take a look at four models from the Spring Summer line from Gucci.  Sunglasses are a big part of Gucci and sometimes their design is very strong.  They quality is not as high as many of brands that are made in Japan, but is reasonable.

Gucci Sunglasses 2985 Shiny Black

I really like this style just for the ring on the hinge.  The interlocking Gucci logo is very classy.  It’s a simple style but this little detail really makes it stand out.  The price is $300.

Gucci Sunglasses 2807 Shiny Brown

I’m not a big fan of this style, however, it might look good when wearing it.  It’s always something to keep in mind when looking at sunglasses.  The way the temples are attached to the frames is not smooth and gives it a very technical look, which is usually not what you want from a pair of Gucci sunglasses.  You want class and style.  The price is $375.

Gucci Sunglasses 2969 Dark Purple

This style is loud and bold and I love it.  The tortoise color detailing in the hinge on the temples is excellent and the oversize gives it a powerful look.  I expect it to be popular this year.  The price is about $345.

Gucci Sunglasses 2935 Black

This style is clearly a very simple model and is for those looking to show off that they can afford Gucci sunglasses.  I’m not particularly fond it of, but it’s also inoffensive.  It’s a safe bet for someone looking for a plastic wrap.  The price is about $160.

This really is the first time we’ve presented Gucci sunglasses here and it is nice to see the 2009 line finally.  Look for more about Gucci from us in the future.

Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses 2009 (504, 441, 448)

It is our first time looking at Roberto Cavalli here on the blog and we are excited to look at some of what’s available for 2009.  We present three models here below.

Roberto Cavalli 504 Sunglasses

This is a standard aviator with minor detail on the temples.  It is definitely more subtle for Roberto Cavalli sunglasses, but that’s not necessarily a good thing as they can be way over the top.  This style will look good on many girls because of its simplicity, but would also go well with formal wear.  The price is about €190.

Roberto Cavalli 441 Sunglasses

This pair is certainly worth note.  The detail in it is over the top, but beautiful.  The temples are exquisite.  There are crystals running from the front to the back of them, and the circles are in fact in the shape of snakes.  Within each snake is the Roberto Cavalli logo.  These have got to be worn with something nice.  Do not bring them to the beach.  The price is about €275.

Roberto Cavalli 448 Sunglasses

The 448 is also no slouch.  Intricate detailing is again the highlight and the design is excellent.  Big circles are very prominent, but if you look at the circles that attach the frame to the temples, you will notice that they are bent and from the front look like C’s, hence Roberto Cavalli.  The price is about €290.

Roberto Cavalli sunglasses’ style is not subtle.  There are always intricate lines, big circles and all kinds of bling.  This year is no exception.  If I had to choose one of the above for a girl, it would be the 448S.

Cutler and Gross Sunglasses for Spring 2009

I’d like to take this time to introduce one of my favourite new brands and one you should keep your eye on for 2009, Cutler and Gross.

I’d heard about them before but hadn’t had the chance to really look into them until lately, when people kept asking me about the style of Dominic Greene in the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace.  Someone identified them as Cutler and Gross 0425 Brown Stripe.  So I contacted them to see what is going to be available for 2009 and I was blown away by what they sent me.  They scream hand crafted vintage and I need to get myself a pair of them.  Adding to their appeal, they now have a deal with Carl Zeiss, so all of the lenses are now made by the famous German company.  The following are just a few select models.  There are literally tons of great models and I’ll get to more later on.

Style - 0915 Brass Chrome

Style - 0886 Black Dark Turtle

Style - 0880 Black Dark Turtle

The range is inspired by Grace Kelly and her relationship and marriage with Prince Rainer, when the two spent time on the water, exploring the Mediterranean and being glamorous.  This feeling is reflected not only in the vintage styling of the sunglasses, but also the colors and the shapes.  You can really feel that the concept came together even though each pair has its own feel.

Check the Cutler and Gross website for more information and locations.
