Oliver Peoples Re-Release Vintage Styles

Oliver Peoples is re-realeasing some vintage styles from the 80's to capitalize on the huge vintage sunglasses craze that seems to never end.  I'm a fan of Oliver Peoples styles but I'm not as familiar with their vintage styles.  That should change with these releases.

Oliver Peoples Vintage Re-Release

I love the simple shape, translucent temples and most of all the red-tinted frames.  Three styles will be released and all of them should be strong.

Brad Pitt Sunglasses – Cazal 735 – Celebrity Sighting

Brad Pitt was recently spotted looking as sharp as always sporting a vintage pair of sunglasses from Cazal eyewear, model number 735.

Brad Pitt Sunglasses - Always sharp

I love the sharp edges

Brad Pitt’s sunglasses collection must be massive, because every time I see a picture of him it’s with a new pair.  This look he’s got here is really nice.  Cazal design has always been centered on polygon shapes, sharp edges and nice metal finishes.  Even their recent line has this kind of a feel to it.  The vintage items are so hot that it will be tough to find this exact model.

Porsche Retro Styles

According the Moodie Report, Porsche sunglasses is reissuing two popular styles from the 70’s and 80’s and will fit them with modern technology.

The bridge on these is so cool

The P8478 is a very retro-looking aviator style that was originally released in 1978.  I love the rounded silver metal curve at the bridge.  Also, the lens color is an excellent green, different from that of the Ray-Ban aviators.  The style will be available in silver or gold and apparently will use titanium in the frames.

Porsche Design Sunglasses 8480

The P8480 are one the first folding sunglass styles that were available.  They can fold all the way down to 6cm and still come with the leather case.   Both styles should be available later this year and are being released in conjunction with Porsche’s Design Heritage Collection.   The price is unknown.

Celebrity Sighting - Lindsay Lohan and Ray-Ban 3025 Sunglasses

A poster-girl for all things celebrity, Linsday Lohan wears a lot of different sunglasses.  Whether this is to hide from the paparazzi or look fashionable, she’s always covered up.

The tongue has got to be intentional

This picture is hilarious in so many ways (the hair!) because it is not taken from a movie, it’s from the street.  I guess if you are a movie star, your life also becomes a movie.  Lindsay Lohan’s sunglasses in this picture are Ray-Ban 3025, the classic aviator.  She is seen wearing them (and other Ray-Ban models) often, and I think they look good on her.

Oliver Peoples Sunglasses for Spring and Summer 2009

I get a lot of people asking me about what’s coming out next year, and what’s going to be popular.  To be honest, I think a lot of it is going to be the same as 2008.  You just need to look at the top brands to know what is going to rule the streets, because sometimes it really is them that makes the decisions.

Take Oliver Peoples sunglasses.  They have been a standard on the faces of many Hollywood stars for years now and in 2009 they are sticking with a lot of classic style frames and adding subtle touches here and there.  I’ve been looking at their 2009 line and there are a lot of great models.  We’ll look at three here today.

Bartley

The first model is called the Bartley and is a great aviator style.  It looks very classic, but the subtle modern touches are really nice.  They’ve used titanium for the temples, so you know it will be lightweight.  Also, the large double-bridge gives it a really powerful feel, but will still probably look great on everyone’s face.

Sheldrake

Sheldrake (above) is apparently inspired by the style of Andy Warhol.  The frames are hand-made acetate and the different colors are beautiful.  This frame can be for optical lenses or sunglasses. Being able to see the wire frame on the inside of the acetate is a nice touch.  Finally, the shape of the bridge is quite unique.  It is similar to an old Persol shape, but there is no other like it.

Tayla

Tayla carries on the current oversized feminine trend that doesn’t want to go away.  This model is part of their “Suspended Metal Series”, which means you can see the base metal frame sort of floating inside of the acetate.  This is a common look with Oliver Peoples this year and looks great in the Tayla.  Moulded after the mod look of the 60’s, this glamorous frame will look great on a lot of people next year.

If you are looking for classic shapes with modern finishing, Oliver Peoples is a great choice.  There are many other interesting models for next year so make sure to check them all out.

The Bartley retails for about $320, Sheldrake $220 and Tayla $390.

Cutler and Gross Sunglasses for Spring 2009

I’d like to take this time to introduce one of my favourite new brands and one you should keep your eye on for 2009, Cutler and Gross.

I’d heard about them before but hadn’t had the chance to really look into them until lately, when people kept asking me about the style of Dominic Greene in the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace.  Someone identified them as Cutler and Gross 0425 Brown Stripe.  So I contacted them to see what is going to be available for 2009 and I was blown away by what they sent me.  They scream hand crafted vintage and I need to get myself a pair of them.  Adding to their appeal, they now have a deal with Carl Zeiss, so all of the lenses are now made by the famous German company.  The following are just a few select models.  There are literally tons of great models and I’ll get to more later on.

Style - 0915 Brass Chrome

Style - 0886 Black Dark Turtle

Style - 0880 Black Dark Turtle

The range is inspired by Grace Kelly and her relationship and marriage with Prince Rainer, when the two spent time on the water, exploring the Mediterranean and being glamorous.  This feeling is reflected not only in the vintage styling of the sunglasses, but also the colors and the shapes.  You can really feel that the concept came together even though each pair has its own feel.

Check the Cutler and Gross website for more information and locations.

Chloe Myrte (2119) Sunglasses

Some styles just stick out in your mind and deserve mention, or purchase.  A model I’ve been seeing around a lot is the Chloe Myrte (or 2119).  It’s been very popular for over a year now and doesn’t seem to be going away.  Its style is very similar to a Tom Ford style and has similar curves, but is definitely Chloe.  This year they have added a few models with clear frames and colored lenses, which accent last years models quite well.

The strongest pair

The small detailing of the gold on the side makes the first one above my favourite.  It has a very retro feel and will not fit on everyone’s face just because of the sheer size, but if it works on you, it will work well.

I’ve seen this model on many celebrities including, Lindsay Lohan, Laura Conrad and Paris Hilton.  Also, the character Lauren from The Hills was wearing them in a recent episode.

The sunglasses come with a rigid white case with the Chloe signature on top.  They retail for anywhere from $250 and up.  Check out their site below.

Shameless Fixation # 1 - Dita Eyewear and Cazal Vintage 902

I own a lot of pairs of sunglasses and the collection is always growing, but I’m not Old Money, so sometimes I can only pine for what I don’t have. This feeling comes around from time to time and it’s either me personally or my bank which keeps me from buying said item.

Right now my shameless fixation is Dita and Cazal’s collaborative re-release of the vintage 902. Gaze your eyes:

The whole set

This is the sharpest style I’ve seen in a long time. The lines are so slick and incredibly cut. A lot of work was put into this model. Cazal and Dita are both known for their intricate frames and this one is no exception.
