Celebrity Sighting – Kim Kardashian and Dior 60s 1 Sunglasses

I’ve been away from North America for quite some time now, and I can thankfully said that I’ve avoided some “phenomenons”, that being a lot cheap TV and pop culture that normally would drive me nuts.  One of these is the “famous for being famous” Hollywood/L.A. subculture of young people who develop their names by partying and get spat out the bottom of the reality TV world eventually.  Today’s celebrity concerns one of them.

Honestly, I’ve only in the last two months even heard of Kim Kardashian, but suddenly she seems to be creeping her way into my life as I peruse the internet to give you the best and latest in sunglass trends.  She’s been seen wearing a bit of everything (and nothing) but the model pictured above is Dior 60s 1 Sunglasses.  It fits her quite well and almost gives her credibility.

She is beautiful, no doubt, and I’m a fan of these sunglasses, but I can’t say I’m her biggest fan.  If you want a pair, they retail for about $200.

Sunglasses in the Movie Body of Lies

In what is being toted as having Oscar potential, the high anticipated movie Body of Lies is on its way to theatres with an all star crowd.  It is the first time I can remember Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe working together, and it looks like they have a lot of chemistry.

The movie revolves around the story of a CIA agent (DiCaprio) being sent to find a high-ranking terrorist by his boss (Crowe).  Of course all goes wrong.  The release date is set for October 10, 2008.

On the poster and in several scenes of the movie, Leonardo is wearing Ray-Ban 3360, a very popular model.  He is also wearing a pair of aviators in the film, but I’ve yet to identify them.  If anyone knows, drop me a line.

The Ray-Bans retail for about $130 but I’ve seen them even cheaper.  If you’ve seen the film, let me know what you think about it.

Dita and Silly Thing (Think Silly) Sunglasses Collaboration

Continuing its tradition of collaborating with other brands, Dita has gotten together with Silly Thing to make an interesting looking model for the Silly collection.  Right now these are the only shots available.

No justice in this picture

The quality of the model will reflect Dita’s craftsmanship, but the style is definitely Silly Thing.  Their recent products all have a special feel to them, and they intentional make them stick out from the average shoe, t-shirt or hat.  This pair of shades seems to have some of that, but I’ll have to see more pictures.  The shape is inspired by the classic Moscot frame, an ancient shape, but has its own flavourings.

The release is set for October 1st and with the Dita eyewear name attached to it, they could do very well.

Chloe Myrte (2119) Sunglasses

Some styles just stick out in your mind and deserve mention, or purchase.  A model I’ve been seeing around a lot is the Chloe Myrte (or 2119).  It’s been very popular for over a year now and doesn’t seem to be going away.  Its style is very similar to a Tom Ford style and has similar curves, but is definitely Chloe.  This year they have added a few models with clear frames and colored lenses, which accent last years models quite well.

The strongest pair

The small detailing of the gold on the side makes the first one above my favourite.  It has a very retro feel and will not fit on everyone’s face just because of the sheer size, but if it works on you, it will work well.

I’ve seen this model on many celebrities including, Lindsay Lohan, Laura Conrad and Paris Hilton.  Also, the character Lauren from The Hills was wearing them in a recent episode.

The sunglasses come with a rigid white case with the Chloe signature on top.  They retail for anywhere from $250 and up.  Check out their site below.

Badgley Mischka Eyewear

Now for something completely Hollywood.

Well known for their wedding dresses and evening dresses, designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka have also made a name for themselves with their Badgley Mischka eyewear.  It fits very well with the rest of their line, that being 1940’s Hollywood-somehow-meets-the-modern-times-happily.

Their style covers many different moods and themes, but a lot of the current line is large plastic frames, many of which have classy looking prints on them.  A sample below:

Very nice looking prints

One of the few masculine looks

Their sunglasses have become quite popular of late and have been seen on such red carpet dwellers such as Catherine-Zeta Jones, Brad Pitt, Sarah Jessica Parker and their current face, Sharon Stone.

If you are looking for a price range, they can go anywhere from $250 to over $400.

Puzzle Sunglasses by Guillaume Bordas

Looking almost like something that would come out of a designer cereal box, these puzzle sunglasses by French designer Guillaume Bordas are truly something you’ve never seen.  They come complete with enough pieces to put your frame and lenses together, and have a useful instruction page just to do so.  This is the first pair of sunglasses I’ve ever seen that you need to put together after buying, but I assure you they are much better looking and cooler than anything you’d find at Ikea.

A little worried about how they would look on me

Even the instructions look cool

Guillame Bordas hails from French but current lives in Hong Kong.  He does all kinds of design, including furniture, electronics and photo editing.  With a creative mind like that, I’m hoping he continues with different sunglass styles.   I can’t say I particularly like the shape of the final product, but the construction and design are outstanding.

Shameless Fixation # 2 – Tom Ford’s Ford Sunglasses

It seems as though Tom Ford’s genuine focus on the sunglasses line of this year has paid off.  They are selling well everywhere and for good reason.  They put an incredible amount of time into not only the design and materials, but the color matching is excellent as well.  The detailing on the latest collection is not over the top and is in fact quite subtle.  There are no large logos anywhere, but some “T’s” are found here and there, like on the bridge of the model below.

My favourite model and current fixation is aptly named Ford.  Have a peek.

So slick

I tried these on at a shop the other day and wearing them gave me the closest look to celebrity I’ve ever had, which, granted, is not saying much, but I still felt like money.  If I had the wallet of a celebrity I would buy them right away to complete a vintage look.  This pair goes for over $300 in the U.S., so I’m accepting donations as of now.

The model has a classic enough feel that it’s going to look good for years to come, so you can think of it as an investment.  Cheers to Tom Ford for this excellent model and overall collection

Bless No. 34 Sunglasses

A new model has recently been released by the design team at Bless sunglasses, simply called No.34.  Combining vintage and modern style, it has quickly caught the attention of many sunglasses enthusiasts.

Bless No. 34

Abnormally large bag?

Cool box

The style of Bless No. 34 is a lot like a standard wayfarer-like Ray-ban shape, but is has got a lot of its own style.  The repeating silver and black ridges on the bridge are excellent and the gradation on the lenses (am I seeing things?) that matches the silver on the frames adds another layer of depth.  The packaging is also very cool, as they opted for a plastic box instead of the usual case.

Bless is based out of Berlin and having been making sunglasses for years.  Currently, the website carries very little information other than a video of models playing soccer on a runway (not kidding here).  They have got other styles online, including other classics like aviators, but there is generally not a lot of information out there about them.  If anyone has more information, let me know.

Mykita Eyewear – No. 2 Series - Simplicity and Charm

Launched as recently as 2004, Mykita eyewear has grown from a small little German brand to a big name among celebrities.  Founded by Harald Gottschling, Daniel Haffmans, Philipp Haffmans, and Moritz Krueger, their focus on innovation truly stands out. Like many German eyewear companies, the quality of Mykita frames is excellent and their design is only of the reasons they are becoming very popular everywhere.  The frames have no screws on them anywhere.  They use a simple fastening method to connect the metal frames to the temples, and a sheath system for the acetate frames.  Their No.1 series was all stainless steel frames, while No.2 series (part of which you see below) are the acetate frames.

Daniel

Ferris

Fletcher

They have been spotted on the faces of many famous celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Bruce Willis, Hugh Grant and many more.  This can’t hurt their growth at all.  They have not been found on my face sadly.

If you want to get a pair for yourself and have the pocket to back it up, head to their website and search through retailers.  If you can’t find anything near you, leave a message and they will get back to you.

Mosley Tribes Release The Lyndel - Another Classic Style

Mosley Tribes continues their takeover of the sunglasses world with a release of their very own Wayfarer, called the Lyndel.

The Lyndel - A beautiful print

There’s not much to these, but Mosley Tribes has added their own style to the Wayfarer in the squared edges here and there, and opting for the double buttons where the temples meet the face of the sunglasses (although this is also common).  It makes for an original look and should probably fit most peoples faces, being adjustable.

If you like the Wayfarer style but are sick of Ray-Ban, then this is a great alternative.  Available at your local Mosley Tribes stockist next spring.

Martin Margiela L’Incognito Sunglasses

Martin Margiela represents a revolt in fashion; a serious disregard of modern concepts of luxury and fashion.  He’s rebuilt old garments and garbage in couture, and remains a mystery because of his obsession with privacy.

His sunglasses are no exception.  If you look at what is mainstream and popular today, and look at his latest creations, you will see what I mean.  His first pair is aptly called L’Incognito.  They are certainly futuristic looking sunglasses and are interestingly made from a single piece of polycarbonate.

This works

Somehow this one doesn't

Martin Margiela has teamed up with Marcolin, a huge player in the eyewear industry and competition for Luxottica.  They have made what is Martin’s first pair of sunglasses and I really don’t know what to think of them.  I’ve never seen anything like it, except for maybe in movies.  I’m not sure if they could be worn very often, but that’s really not the point.

I’m not even sure if they have a nose-pad or how they fit anyone, but there is definitely something interesting about them.  Would you dare wear them outside?
